What is A Bill of Materials (BOM)?

When you’re in the process of taking your idea from a concept to a product, creating a bill of materials is an important step.

So, what is a bill of materials (BOM)?

A BOM is a detailed list of all the raw materials, components, and instructions required to construct or manufacture your product. A BOM is usually organised in a hierarchy, with the finished product at the top, down to the raw materials.

When is a bill of materials useful?

When your product is ready for manufacture, an accurate BOM is a crucial component. With this BOM, the manufacturers can ensure that materials and parts are available and establish a smooth assembly process.

A BOM is a centralised source of information used to manufacture a product. When manufacturers start assembling a product, they follow the instructions listed in the bill of materials.

If your BOM is inaccurate, this can create issues and delays in manufacturing, leading to extra expense. Production may need to stop to organise missing parts or until the correct assembly process is decided.

To ensure your BOM is effective, include details like:

  • Part code & part name
  • Specifications
  • Description
  • Manufacturing Process or Other (i.e., custom injection moulded vs. stock/off-the-shelf)
  • Quantity
  • Component dimensions and weight
  • Material

With this level of detail, you can avoid any errors and streamline the manufacturing process.

A manufacturing BOM includes all the assemblies and parts required to construct a finished product ready for shipping. It also includes packaging details to get the product to the customer.

If you’re looking to get your concept developed and manufactured, take the time to produce an accurate bill of materials. It will save you time and money in the long run, make your product more appealing to manufacturing companies, and help to make small and large production processes easier.
