In an unprecedented interview on UK’s Blue Peter show, viewers were treated to a rare glimpse inside Apple’s secret product design laboratory, run by Sir Jonathan Ive, senior Vice-President of Industrial Design for Apple.

The show revealed the huge range of industrial milling and prototyping machines that Apple has on its Cupertino campus.

Sir Jonathan confessed to being a life-long Blue Peter fan, and even recalled some of the inventions he had seen, praising their recycling.

In the special episode, Sir Jonathan reviews several product designs sent in by Blue Peter viewers through a series of video messages from the children behind the designs.

The firm was able to hide prototype products in the lab, but it did provide a rare glimpse into the inner sanctum of Apple’s designer.

After being presented with the show’s highest accolade, the gold Blue Peter badge, Sir Jonathan reveals that the CNC milling machine has been used to create a unique giant Blue Peter badge, crafted from solid aluminium through a 10-hour process.

The giant aluminium Blue Peter badge was presented to Ewan Vinnicombe, Acting Editor of Blue Peter, who said, “Sir Jonathan Ive is an inspiration to children around the world and we are ecstatic to hear his comments and design advice to our viewers who will remember such feedback for a lifetime.”
