Product design development typically involves three elements: form, experience and utility. Often the client will have addressed the issue of utility, so they seek the services of a product design consultancy for issues relating to experience and form. These are some of the key steps involved in developing a product.

User and market

The process begins with understanding the user and market. Issues such as who the user is and why they would need the product have to be addressed. Any alternatives that are currently available should also be noted.

Design

The design step can involve participatory research, concept testing and building prototypes. This stage will create and fine tune the product concept.

Refinement

The third steps involves further refinement and enhancement of the product. There may be further research and testing involved at this stage, and the final product should be a product that is close to completion.

Add appealing features

The fourth and final step involves adding any features that will make the product more attractive to consumers, and that will make the item truly stand out in a competitive market.
