Bob “The Bee Man” Luttrell came to Dienamics with an idea for a honey frame designed to harvest clean, clear honey without sacrificing quality or bees.

The structure differed from the regular honeycomb shape of beehives, instead using a square framework. This design allows for honey to be harvested effectively, but most importantly, without harming the bees within the colony.

Bob has been advocating for the protection of bees and beehives, particularly those of the native Australian “stingless” bees, for many years. He has been raising awareness across Queensland and personally relocating hundreds of native bee colonies at risk of being disturbed or destroyed.

As part of his work, Bob developed the concept for the Stingless Bee Treasure Frame. He came to Dienamics with the design idea and we helped to develop it so that it could be injection moulded, making it much easier for manufacturing.

Bob was initially worried about using plastic, as a he knew some plastics would be either toxic to the bees or contaminate the honey which is the delicious byproduct of working with bees. Dienamics helped Bob choose a foodgrade safe plastic, which was durable and UV resistant so that the Treasure Frames would never hurt the bees or us humans!

Once Bob was happy with the design, we built the injection moulding tool so that the frame could be manufactured and then implemented in bee hives all over the country.

The design has proved a success, with Bob’s recently winning the 2018 Science Innovation Award, from the Healthy Land and Water Awards.

The Healthy Land and Water Awards celebrates the achievements and efforts of those working to protect and improve the health of South East Queensland’s environment. The recognition of Bob’s design as the science innovation winner speaks volumes about the success of the product and the effective manufacturing process.
