Once you’ve designed, prototyped and tested your product, the next step is to manufacture it. Manufacturing will take your idea from conception to reality.

Product manufacturing may sound like a complex process. However, it can be broken down into four simple steps.

In this blog, we’re stepping through the 4 steps of product manufacturing so that you can know what to expect.

Tool Making

The first step in the manufacturing process is tool making. This is about considering how your product will be made. It involves creating steel moulds, jigs and dies that are used to produce products. Tool making is one of (in not the) most precise trade out there. Everything needs to be made within 0.03mm to ensure the Tool runs correctly and the product is produced at a high quality. This is why the tool making process is so critical and why it is important to engage an experience toolmaker.

Mass Production

Once your product has been tooled, it can then be put into production. This step involves mounting the tool in a moulding machine and running the required number of parts. How long this stage takes depends on how many parts you need and who long the tool takes to cycle through each shot. Unless your product needs overmoulding or a machine operator for any reason, the mould process can be fully automatic. Injection moulding is a great way to produce a lot of product in a short amount of time for a low cost. As well, if the tooling has been done correctly, all of the parts will come out looking uniform and without any post process handling like trimming.

Assembly

Once you have the parts are moulded you are ready to do any assembly needed. The assembling process can be an exciting stage, where you can really start to see the final product coming to life.

Packaging

The final step is packaging. Packaging your product is important for protecting it from damage during transport and for appealing to your customers. It should be eye-catching and on-brand, whilst being functional.
