You’re never going to look at products the same again!

This blog series is going to change how you look at the products around you.

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to breakdown how you should judge the value of a product, show you what good design looks like, and give you some insider tips and tricks on making your product design successful!

Take a second to look around you. Everything around you is designed.

For me – I’m sitting at my desk. My laptops made by ASUS, I’m writing on a Logitech keyboard, on my wrist is a Seiko watch, and to my right, a Nespresso coffee mug. These are all well known, established brands.

The thing is, whilst it can be an indicator of quality, a good brand no longer means you’re getting a good product. A company’s brand doesn’t guarantee that what you’re buying is designed well, made from high quality materials, and manufactured with precision.

If you want to be able to tell if a product is quality, you need to understand how things are designed and why, and how they’re manufactured.

Questions like:

  • Why is the product designed like this? Is it to make the product easier / better to use, or is it for manufacturing reasons?
  • What materials are used? Are they fit for purpose?
  • What manufacturing techniques were used? To what standard were the components manufactured – was time and care given, or were they rushed and made cheap?
  • How many parts are there – how do they fit together, are they screwed, clipped, glued, etc.?

It’s refreshing to see that people are pushing to buy more Australian designed and made products. As a family owned and run Australian company, we are excited to see where this trend takes us. To play our part, we want to provide you with information and techniques that’ll help you better understand the product industry, and hopefully succeed in it.

Stayed tuned in the coming weeks as we go through some product design examples, case study’s, and give some practical pointers on design and manufacturing best practice.
