As an independent inventor, it’s very important to stay in touch with what’s happening in the world of innovation, both locally and abroad. Keeping abreast of the latest news, inventions, and trends can be a source of inspiration. Furthermore, there are now many high quality educational resources available on the Internet, so there is plenty of support available for inventors to get their ideas off the ground.

We’ve put together our top blog sites for independent inventors to draw inspiration from, and even educate themselves on the invention process.

Australian Inventors

1The Australian Inventors website is run by the Inventors Association of Australia, which was started in 1958. Their aim is to educate and support Australian inventors in all aspects of the invention process, therefore maximising their chances of commercialisation.

As a membership organisation, they also act as a conduit to governments and councils to better represent independent inventors in Australia.

The Australian Inventors website is a useful source of information, and they also issue a monthly newsletter, organise monthly meetings, and provide an online forum and personal advice on the feasibility of submitted inventions.

Inventor Spot

2Inventor Spot is a comprehensive site focused on independent inventors. They have a large team of bloggers that source daily news, inventions, and ideas to share with their community.

Their blog is a valuable source of inspiration and ideas, with regular content and a gallery to showcase inventions. The website also offers a forum for inventors to discuss ideas with each other. To help the commercialisation of new inventions, they publish an advice series for inventors and also have a comprehensive directory of related service providers.

The United Inventors’ Association of America

3The United Inventors’ Association of America is the largest and oldest non-profit inventor organisation in the United States. As a membership based organisation, they help and support independent inventors throughout the invention process. They do this through education and support via articles, resources, and a service directory.

Their blog is a great source of ideas and inspiration when determining how best to execute an idea.

Quirky

4Quirky is a crowdsourcing platform that allows inventors to submit their ideas and potentially see them come to life. The Quirky blog is an excellent source of inspiration, whether it be browsing the products that are being submitted each day, learning about inventors, or seeing what happens behind the scenes of the selection and end to end commercialisation process.

The Inventors’ Round Table

5The Inventors’ Round Table aims to provide a safe and innovative forum that allows inventors to connect and interact with each other. It has a large resources base, and is active in organising community roundtable discussions. They organise an annual invention conference, and hold meetings three times a month in Colorado, USA.

Innovation by Techdirt

6Techdirt is an influential blog that was started in 1997, and focuses on providing content related to government policy, technology, and legal issues. It analyses the effects that these issues have on companies, and their ability to innovate and scale.

There is a large active community of readers that contribute content, and the Techdirt blog has been awarded ‘thought leadership’ awards by Forbes and Business Week.

Whatever stage your invention is at, keeping your finger on the pulse with these resources can provide unexpected inspiration or perhaps even help you commercialise that idea you’ve been thinking about or working on.
