Are you in the process of creating a new product? If so, you may be wondering about the differences between product research and development.
What is Product Research?
Research is a learning process. This is when we try to define the way things work and to more clearly understand them.
It’s about asking wide open questions like:
- Is it possible?
- Why does it happen?
Product research allows you to explore what’s possible. It’s not connected to an action or solving a specific problem.
During the research stage, your team can test the viability of your potential new product. The development point comes after the research, and is the act of turning your idea into a real product that you can market and sell.
What is Product Development?
Development is about achieving function. This is the time to narrow down our focus and consider how we can achieve our purpose. It’s about creating a viable product to achieve your goals.
In the development phase, we ask:
- Can I make this happen in a reliable way at an acceptable cost?
Then, we apply known concepts to particular problems to come up with reliable solutions. It needs to be functional and useful. Taking the time to fully develop your product during this stage can save your hassles later on.
Product development is not limited to creating new products. It can also be about improving existing products so that they can perform better. For example, you could add new features or revamp existing features to renew your existing product. This is still part of the development process.
Why are they both important?
To create a successful product, you need to work through both the research and development phases. Without research, your development will be slower, more difficult and less effective.
While it can be tempting to plow ahead with your development, moving forward without a full understanding can mean being blind-sided when things stop working later on.
Research is like the essential preparation work for development.
