There is an increasing awareness of the impact that industrial growth has on the environment and future generations.
Sustainable manufacturing is now more necessary than ever and product design plays an important role in creating the opportunity for sustainability in product manufacturing.
Each product goes through a similar life cycle and each of these steps is influenced by the initial product design. These are:
- Manufacturing
- Transport
- Use
- Disposal
By thinking ahead to these steps in the product design process and how they can be greener, it will significantly influence the sustainability of its manufacturing. Here’s how…
1. Designing for a Longer Lifespan
Single-use, disposable items are still abundant in our society and often do not break down
easily.
Designing a product to last is a great technique to create sustainable manufacturing. Buying a
quality, reusable product that lasts for years will consume fewer resources and energy than
creating the same product over and over for a shorter lifespan.
Keeping this in mind and acting accordingly in the design stage is one way that sustainable
manufacturing is created.
2. Design for Greener Materials
Designing a product that is able to function using ‘greener’ raw materials in the manufacturing stage can significantly reduce its carbon footprint or help it to biodegrade in the disposable stage.
This means creating products that are able to be made out of materials that are:
- Abundant
- Easily reproduced
- Renewable
- Recycled or Recyclable; and/or
- Biodegradable
This will improve the final disposal section of a product’s life cycle, where it can be reused, recycled or broken down.
3. Cradle to Cradle
The Cradle to Cradle approach, popularised by William McDonough and Dr. Micahel Braungart, is a way to give a product a new lease on life after it has been used for its intended purpose.
This invites the designer to think up a way that the product can be recycled, in all or part, into
something new. This way, the product avoids landfill and can be utilised in another way, with
some innovation and planning.
One of the simplest steps that can be taken towards a Cradle to Cradle design, is to manufacture your products components using homogeneous materials. By doing this, the product can be easily disassembled and broken down into its separate parts at the end of its useful life.
