During the product design phase of any project, there are often technical terms and acronyms used to describe various techniques and processes.
It can be confusing.

So, to help you understand product design a little better, we’ve put together this list of commonly used terminology.
Product Design Terms:
Aesthetics – Is an artistic concept of what is perceived to be pleasing to the eye or beautiful.
Assembly – The process of fitting together separate components or parts of a product.
Bill of Materials (BOM) – A list of components used in the assembly of a product, including quantities, part numbers, drawings, part names, design revision level, manufacturing process, sub-assemblies, material, colours.
CAD – Computer-Aided Design 3D virtual modelling software. These systems are designed to make accurate representations of an object that exist in the real world or will exist.
Concept Assessment – Process of gathering design ideas and developing solutions.
Design – To plan, organise or structure formal elements.
Design for Manufacture – The concept of integrating product design and process planning with the aim to design products that are more economical and easier to manufacture.
Design Patent – Legal protection of the distinct visual qualities of a manufactured product.
Industrial Designer – A professional who conceptualises, designs and makes products.
Injection Moulding – A manufacturing technique for forming thermoplastic, ceramic or metal material by injection into a sealed mould.
Project Scoping – A project planning process involving documentation of exact details, goals, features, process, timeframes and costs.
Prototype – An original version of an item, to serve as an example, from which other forms can be developed.
Tool Making – The process of developing precision tools to be used for the manufacture of products.
