It was recently announced that more than 1.5 million transparent Louis Ghost chairs have been sold over the last 10 years. The chair, which was designed by Philippe Starck in 2002, has been touted by its producer, Kartell, as being “the most widely sold design chair in the world.” Through the design of the chair, Starck pays homage to French baroque style, with an oval back and twisted angular arms all within a single piece of moulded plastic. Even though it may be too early to determine if the chair will be considered an icon of this period, the simple design of the chair does indeed have staying power. The chair has made an undeniably large impression with consumers, and has a design that could evoke feelings of timelessness and nostalgia in later generations. Jennifer Hudson, Editor of The International Design Yearbook, noted regarding furniture icons: “It is no longer enough to make something look good and function, but it has to appeal to our emotions and use technologies and materials in ingenious and imaginative ways.” The Louis Ghost chair certainly does just that.
