Kickstarter added yet another million-dollar project to its list recently, but it’s not an iPhone accessory, gadget, or celebrity rock project. Instead, the project is an assortment of over 200 fantasy figurines called Bones that can be used to play roleplaying games such as Dungeons & Dragons.
The Bones campaign is now the third-highest grossing Kickstarter in history, but Reaper Miniatures, the company behind Bones, has proven you don’t need anything high-tech to make millions on Kickstarter; just a high-intensity fan base and a great strategy.
The success of Bones didn’t guarantee its growth, however, as a new plastic design is expensive to produce. Ed Pugh, the founder of Reaper, explains: “Figure moulds for the current pieces already in production have ranged from $8,000 to $32,000 each. A dragon mould might begin at $25,000 but could easily rise to $75,000 depending on the decisions you make.”
This is a great example of how using Kickstarter to generate working capital can really help propel a company like Reaper Miniatures into success.
