Recently, product designers from Samsung’s Korea headquarters gathered and shared their approach to product design and the company’s philosophy regarding their products.
The following are just some of the other insightful comments from the design team regarding how they approach designs:
-
- On dealing with the fast pace of change in the industry, they said: “We preempt the change, based on research and development of what the user will want. The production time has halved, but we try to make up for this by intelligently forecasting our needs.”
- Even when the technology isn’t there yet, the designers focus on coming up with designs that push the limits. In some cases, they designed products years before the technology was available to make it happen.
- When choosing the type of material used for a product, they think about the company’s design philosophy. “On the Galaxy SIII we focused on making it more human, and how the surface moves, and so we thought metal may not be the best material … we thought plastic was more warm.”
- To find inspiration to innovate on designs, the designers think first about what the customer wants in order to make the product more “human”.
