There is a big difference between designs that look good and designs that work well in practice.
The technique of story-centred design can end this confusion. The technique involves a series of narrative use-cases being created for a product which effectively illustrate the journey of the user at every step.
The benefit of story-centred design is that it facilitates transition away from superficial details, enabling better decisions based on how a product will actually work for users.
Designs should not be treated as blueprints. When designs are presented out of context of their use, often only an understanding of the appearance of the product can be gained. This does not allow for an appreciation of how the product works and the interaction that customers can have with it.
When designing by story, dozens of sequential mock ups are critiqued. The mock ups in sequence become similar to frames in a filmstrip. They depict the experience of a customer from the very beginning and at every stage of the process as a goal is achieved. Importantly, the mock ups illuminate the critical nature of design at every stage of the process.
