Mass production plastic parts

When you’re looking to take your concept to the next stage of mass production, it’s important to approach manufacturers with the right set of details.

There are several aspects to consider before taking your idea into mass production. Here’s our five steps to prepare your product for manufacturing.

Step 1: Understand Your Needs

There are often many ways to make the same product.

For a manufacturer to quote you the best process and style of manufacturing for your specific product, you need to understand what your needs are.

If you can provide a manufacturer with a; proposed tooling budget; target unit price; number of units you’re looking to manufacture; and any material specific requirements (e.g., UV resistance, transparency, colour, etc.) it will give the manufacturer a starting point from which to work backwards from and get you the best possible option to suit your needs.

Step 2: Do thorough research

It’s important to take the time to do research and find the best manufacturing company for you. Consider how well developed your idea currently is, and whether any changes will need to be made.

The best way to prepare your product for manufacturing is to follow Design for Manufacturing (DFM) guidelines from the start of the design process. This way, when you approach a manufacturer, it will be easier to get your product made.

Often, to design a product to be manufactured, it needs to be designed by someone with manufacturing knowledge and experience. It’s incredibly important to understand the credentials and experience of the design company and/or designer you are working with before enlisting their services.

Step 3: Create your BOM

BOM stands for Bill of Materials. It’s a list of all the materials and components necessary to build your product. You’ll need a BOM before you can approach a manufacturer.

Learn more about how to create a BOM in our next blog.

Step 4: Approach the Manufacturer

After you’ve figured out your needs, done your research, and organised your BOM, it’s time to approach your chosen manufacturer. Make sure you introduce yourself, your product, and how it will fit into the market. You want the manufacturer to understand your product entirely, so that they can provide the best advice and service possible.

Start with an email and then follow up with a phone or video call to discuss all the details of mass producing your product.

Step 5: Approve the Quote / Sign the Contract

Once you’ve done the groundwork with your chosen manufacturer and they’ve provided you with a quote you’re happy with, congratulations! It’s time to get manufacturing underway.

Agreeing to quote and paying for manufacturing to begin can be scary, particularly if it’s the first product you’ve developed. Just remember, you’ve followed all the steps to ensure that this manufacturer is right for you and that you’ve already built a relationship up with them through meetings, emails, and calls.
