3 Processes Used In Product Prototyping

If you’ve got an idea for a product, one of the best ways to test and develop your concept is with a prototype.

Prototyping helps you to validate your idea, get feedback, and visualise your idea in real life. To prototype means to develop the functionality, assembly, chosen material and mechanics of a design and to look at the technical aspects of your idea.

Prototyping Processes

There are many different types of prototypes and processes for producing them. To simplify things, we’re going to focus on three processes.

  • Proof of Concept: The most important aspect of prototyping is to make sure your idea works and to identify and resolve any issues. Proof of Concept prototypes are basic prototypes made to test how an idea might work.
  • Process Testing: Process testing allows you to see how your product might work in the real world. With a prototype at this stage, you can test things like how easy it is to use, store and transport. These are important factors to consider when your product is being shipped and presented in stores.
  • Materials Testing: Materials testing is the best way to see if your chosen material will work effectively for your idea. For example, if your product needs to survive extreme temperatures or exposure to harsh chemicals, prototyping it with the right material will show you whether or not it’s safe to use.

By prototyping your project, you can thoroughly test and refine your concept. You can minimise design flaws and show that it’s a valid solution for your market. With each stage of prototyping, you can create a better product and improve your consumers’ experience.
