Most people are not aware of what plastic injection machinery is. In terms of product design, all of us are surrounded by plastic objects made with plastic injection machines – such as water bottles, telephone handsets, CD covers, dust bins, electric outlets and a lot more. Did you ever realize that these commonly used items are made out of a plastic injection machine?

So if you have ever been interested about plastic injection machines, here are ten things about these machines that might surprise you:

Fact 1: The market is loaded with plastic injection moulding devices, the size of which may range from a plastic box lid to something as large as your garage!

Tiny medical equipment parts are crafted using micro plastic moulding devices. Most of these parts are very small. In some cases, you have to use a microscope just to see them. These parts are highly efficient and performance oriented. It is a remarkable feat of engineering!

Fact 2: Certain types of moulding machines are capable of producing more than two hundred million parts in a single year! The best thing is that all these parts go towards some productive capacity, nothing is wasted.

Fact 3: The cost of a plastic injection machine can be as much as $800,000, and that’s just the machine, not including the accessories or special tools!

Fact 4: The cost of plastic injections is something that most people are not aware of. They would be surprised to find out that some medical grade injections can be as expensive as $10,000 per kilo.

Fact 5: Each plastic injection machine needs a mould of some sort. Without this mould, no plastic parts can be produced.

Fact 6: There are some plastic injection moulding machines that run without any human interference or support. Just press ‘start’ and away they go!

Fact 7: A person can get crushed if they accidentally get trapped between the two sections of a plastic injection moulding machine. This usually happens when the machine is in the process of closing. Although these machines are equipped with highly efficient pressure sensors, they tend to crush and destroy anything that sets off these sensors.

Fact 8: Most of the plastic moulding injection devices are environmental friendly. All that a machinist needs to do is to set up the machine as instructed and then combine it with ‘green’ operating parts.

Fact 9: Plastic injection moulding machines are responsible for creating almost every plastic item we use on a daily basis. This includes water bottles, plastic pens and canisters of all sorts.

But even highly specialised product are created with plastic injection moulding, like the components used in space shuttles and endoscopic equipment.

Fact 10: One plastic injection machine will last for many decades if it is properly maintained.

Plastic injection machines are incredible feats of engineering. The fact that almost no-one has heard of them or understands how they work is very surprising. Hopefully this article has shed some light on the wonderful world of plastic injection machines.
