The world’s first fully synthetic plastic was bakelite, invented in 1909 in New York by Leo Baekeland, who also coined the term ‘plastics’.
Before that, semi-synthetic plastic products like celluloid and PVC rocked the late 19th century. The invention of parkesine in 1862 led the course and started a wave of plastic production that shaped the modern world as we know it.
